If the camera still works fine, then the answer is simple:

the easiest and best method to download photos and video from your camera to your computer is via a little USB card reader (which are quite cheap these days).

Card readers also work for moving photos from the computer onto a card.

Plug the reader into a USB port and insert the memory card.
It will show up as a drive, and you can simply drag and drop the photos across to the folder of your choice.

look into nikons.
The D40 is pricey (WAY over 200), but very worthwhile and will last a lifetime
As far as regular cameras go they have many high quality cameras (I recommend a coolpix) for under 200 at stores like staples, best buy, costco, etc. just walk to their camera section and ask the salesperson for a recommendation based on your preferences.

What you are experiencing is called camera lag and all digital cameras have this. But a dslr have the shortest lag which will help you catch a scene much quicker. Also a dslr has a memory buffer which temporarily holds the picture while the camera writes the image to the memory card. This makes it possible for this type of cameras to shoot at 3 frames per second. This type of camera will be as fast as your two year old.

Sony's have Carl Zeiss lenses which are great, canon makes a great camera as well. I would suggest one of the two brands. Go for something with at least 3X optical zoom and 6 megapixels......about 6.5 megapixels will produce a picture you may be used to with a standard 35mm camera. Use your money wisely and get more megapixels instead of more useless features.

First - this is NOT a dumb question

The concept of a disposable camera that lets you get digital, pictures is an advertising ploy.

One of the companies (I don't recall which one) advertises that when you return your disposable camera for processing, they will transfer the pictures to a CD so you end up with digital pictures. But it is still a film camera and no more than that.
