What would be the best digital camera to match the quality of a 35mm camera for up-close detailed shots?

I am a freelance writer and would like to post my own photos with my articles online. I know that I may need a camera with detachable lenses. Are there any good quality digital cameras that can match or better the 35mm cameras with detachable lenses? If so, what are they?

any current DSLR is suitable, thats why all photo journalists use them, plus the ease of posting the results online.

Depends what you mean by matching 35mm camera.

If you mean general quality of shots (sharp, crisp and vivid), then, as someone said - just about any dSLR will work for you. I would suggest not going crazy over a great dSLR body, but to pay close attention to a lens choice. Because lens is what really gathers the light and projects a picture on a camera sensor. A great super camera body with a cheap knock-off lens will be much worse than cheapest dSLR body with a great lens. Nikon D40 would be a camera I’d consider. Then choose the lens appropriately for your task… Or one of the Canon digital Rebels…

If by matching quality you mean resolution - as if you plan to print huge posters and banners, you may be out of luck. Rumor has it that lab tests show that to match a good 35mm film you need 40-60 megapixels. Hasselblad does make cameras with this much, but for the same money you can buy a great film SLR with an excellent lens and use the change to buy yourself a nice Lexus….

But I’m taking it that you are interested in a former case. All current dSLR’s will give you great sharp and crisp results for up to 8×10 or even 11×14, provided you have a good lens and know a little bit about photography to get it right.
